Why do we focus on the body and the breath?
The body provides us with an immediate field of sensation. We do not have to think about a bodily sensation in order to experience it—it simply arises into awareness.
Pinch yourself gently on the soft part of the arm. Do you need to think about the sensation in order to feel it, or does it simply appear? Giving attention directly to sensation rather than thinking about it is sometimes called ‘bare attention’.
The breath is particularly useful because it is always with us and is continually moving and changing. This makes it a readily available object to which we can return whenever we discover that attention has wandered.
