What is the difference between Zen meditation and mindfulness?
There is a close relationship between them. Both cultivate the ability to give ourselves wholeheartedly to what is immediately present.
Zazen is seated meditation, whereas what we call mindfulness, or daily life practice, extends this same quality of attention into all the activities of the day. Here the object is not necessarily the breath but whatever is being done just now.
Right now, it is reading this sentence. Later it may be making a cup of coffee, tidying a drawer or walking to the shops. It does not really matter. We give ourselves to the activity, and when the mind becomes distracted, we gently but firmly bring attention back to what is in front of us.
